Biden extended the sanctions against Iran
This is a special program from the ’ANNA NEWS’. I am Constantine Reztsov.
The White House press service reported that the US President Joe Biden extended the sanctions, imposed by the Bill Clinton administration back in 1995 against Iran, for an another year.
“The actions and policies of the Iranian government, including the proliferation of weapons and the development of missiles and other asymmetric and conventional weapons, the network of regional aggression and the campaign it leads in this direction, the support of the terrorist groups, the actions of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and their henchmen — all of this continues to be an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and the economy of the USA» — says the document, signed by Joe Biden.
In 2018, the previous US President, Donald Trump, decided to leave the ’Joint Comprehensive Action Plan’ with Iran, which, in addition to Iran, was signed in 2015 by the 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council, plus Germany, in order to resolve the crisis over the Iranian nuclear research.
The new administration has repeatedly stated that the USA are ready to return to the nuclear deal with Iran. At the same time, the USA expect the first steps from Iran, which, according to Washington, should be the first to return to the full compliance with the terms of the deal, after which the USA will also return to the treaty, and possibly — partially weaken the sanctions against Iran.
Such an agenda doesn’t suit Iran at all, which is ready to return to the full compliance with the terms of the treaty only after the full lifting of the American sanctions. After the USA left the treaty, Iran slowly began to deviate from the obligations, provided by the agreement, and began to increase the production of enriched uranium. In early January, Iran launched the production of uranium enriched up to 20% at the nuclear facility in Fordow. The US State Department consider such actions to be a «nuclear blackmail».
The EU has come up with an initiative to hold an informal meeting of the participants in the deal with Iran on this topic. The USA agreed, but Tehran refused. The official representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Said Khatibzadeh, explained that Iran doesn’t see the conditions for such a meeting, since the US position hasn’t changed.
The ANNA News is following the events. Stay tuned.
