Negotiations in Libya
1 Syria
Alexander Kharchenko, a reporter of »ANNA NEWS», reports: the US military tried to block the path of a Russian military patrol in the Syrian province of Hasakah. The US military tried to block the path of a moving Russian military car near the village of Abra, 50 kilometers away from Hasakah. It was specified that during the event — there was a loud noise, typical for a malfunction of the engine cooling system tube, coming from under the hood of the American M1235 MRAP vehicle. Smoke appeared shortly after, and the vehicle stopped. The Russian patrol went along their route as planned. The Pentagon has yet to commented on the event.
2 Syria
The »SANA» reported that on Wednesday, the residents of the southern provinces of Syria held protests against the US sanctions, which are being used to pressure Damascus. A mass protest took place on the ‘Sultan Atrash’ square, in the city of As-Suwayda, in the province of As-Suwayda, and also in the nearby province of Al-Quneitra. The protesters expressed their support for the Syrian government, and the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. On 8th of June the »SANA» blamed the USA for the escalation of the economic and financial crisis in Syria. According to the »SANA» — the US special envoy for Syria, James Jeffrey, during his meeting with the opposition on 7th of June, admitted that the collapse of the Syrian currency, and the increase of the commodity prices, are the result of the American pressure on Damascus. «The USA are depriving Syrians of food by their inhumane sanctions» — the SANA concluded. On 3rd of June, the Syrian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the new package of sanctions against Damascus, which will enter into force on 17th of June. It was stated that the document «is based on the false evidence, fabricated by the parties hostile to the Syrian people».
3 Libya
The UN Support Mission in Libya reported that the delegations of the head of the Government of National Accord, Faiz Sarraj, and the commander of the Libyan National Army, Khalifa Haftar, are taking part in the third round of negotiations on Libya, as »5+5″ joint military committee. The UN mission held a meeting with the LNA delegation on 3rd of June, and a meeting with the GNA delegation on 9th of June — the UN mission website reported. During the negotiations that took place online, the representatives of Libyan delegations expressed their views on the draft ceasefire agreement that the UN diplomats submitted to them on 23rd of February, 2020. The UN support mission in Libya welcomed the desire of parties for a dialogue. The UN mission also expressed a concern about the escalation in the strategically significant city of Sirt. Earlier on 2nd of June, the UN Mission in Libya announced the agreement of the GNA and the LNA to resume the negotiations on a ceasefire in Libya.
4 Turkey
The Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, stated on air of the »NTV» that the USA should play a more active role in the resolution of the Libyan crisis. «The presidents of Turkey and the USA discussed the situation in Libya. Washington makes statements on Libya, but they are not on the field. We need the USA to play a more active role in Libya. We have already spoken about it. We will work on this matter at the level of presidents, foreign and defense ministers of both countries. The steps must be taken faster» — said Cavusoglu. Earlier the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that during a telephone conversation with the US President, Donald Trump — Turkey and the US reached an agreement on Libya. Erdogan also discussed the Libyan crisis with the Russian President, Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin’s press service reported that the leaders of the two countries expressed their concern over the on-going large-scale clashes in Libya.
