Shooting in a school in Kazan
1 Russia
A school-shooting took place in the city of Kazan. The press service of the President of Tatarstan reported that 9 people were killed: 7 children and 2 adults. The Telegram channel of the Ministry of Education reported that 21 people were injured. 18 injured children are being treated at a children’s hospital, 6 of them are in intensive care. The shooter was arrested, he is 19-years-old Ilnaz Galyaviev, he acted alone. The TASS news agency reported while citing the police that the motive of the school-shooting could be a revenge. 12th of May was declared a day of mourning in Tatarstan.
2 Syria
The ’SANA’ news agency reported that on Monday, an Israeli helicopter fired a missile at a Syrian military position in the Ain-Tin area, in the Quneitra province, 40 km south from Damascus. It was reported that as a result of the attack, 1 man was injured — he was hospitalized. No other details were reported.
3 The USA — Syria
While speaking at a webinar of the non-governmental ’American Association for the Arms Control’, the Director General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Fernando Arias, stated that the OPCW considers «confirmed’’ or ’’probable’’ the use of chemical weapons in Syria in 17 cases. He noted that the OPCW fact-finding mission had investigated 77 allegations of the use of the chemical weapons.
4 The Gaza Strip
A new escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. On the night of 11th of May the Palestinian radicals from the Gaza Strip fired over 200 rockets at Israel. Dozens of people were injured. In response, the IDF hit 140 military targets in the coastal Palestinian enclave. They also killed about 15 operatives from the ’Hamas’ and ’Islamic Jihad’ groups. The IDF begins conscription of 5,000 reserve troops due to the escalation near the Gaza Strip. Earlier, some clashes between the IDF and Palestinians took place in the East Jerusalem, over the eviction of the Arab residents from the Sheikh Jarrah area.
5 Azerbaijan
The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, stated during a meeting with the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister, Jeyhun Bayramov, that Russia intends to outline specific steps to resolve the issues in Karabakh. Sergei Lavrov noted that during the meeting with the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, the current tasks were discussed in great details. Jeyhun Bayramov stated during a joint press conference with Sergei Lavrov that Azerbaijan has fulfilled its obligations to transfer the PoWs to Armenia. He added that over the past 6 months, Armenia received almost 1,600 bodies of victims of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.
6 The USA — Afghanistan
The US Special Representative for Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, stated that the USA will continue to provide the financial and humanitarian aid to Afghanistan after the US troops leave the country. «Afghanistan will be among the first recipients of the US and foreign aid, which includes support for the Afghan security forces, development aid, and humanitarian aid» — the ’Der Spiegel’ quoted his words.
