The Russian air base in Syria was attacked
1 Syria
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that on the evening of 19th of January the terrorists tried to attack the Russian air base ‘Khmeimim’ in Syria. The air defense systems of the base destroyed 3 incoming drones. No-one was injuries. “The Russian air base ‘Khmeimim’ is fully operational” — the Russian Defense Ministry stated. The head of the Russian Center for the Reconciliation of the warring parties in Syria, Major-General Yuri Borenkov, reported that on 18th of January there was an attack on the defensive positions of the Syrian government forces. The attack involved up to 130 terrorists — they were supported by pick-up trucks with heavy machine guns. The attack was repealed thanks to the heavy use of artillery and tanks. 10 Syrian servicemen died, 15 were injured. After losing up to 15 men dead and 25 wounded — the terrorists retreated to their initial positions.
2 Germany
The conference on the settlement of the situation in Libya has ended in Berlin. The text of the final communiqué was agreed upon after the final meeting. The document mentions a ceasefire, an arms embargo, an establishment of a political process, a compliance with the humanitarian law and the human rights, a reform of the security sector, and an economic reform. The document also calls on everyone to refrain from interfering in the armed conflict in Libya. The document allows the UN Security Council to impose sanctions against countries that violate the ban on the import of weapons into Libya. The »ANSA» news agency reports that the warring parties in Libya agreed to establish a ceasefire overseeing commission. The conference participants agreed to not interfere in the internal affairs of Libya.
3 Germany
«RIA NEWS» reports, while citing their diplomatic source in Moscow, that the commander of the Libyan National Army, Khalifa Haftar, refused to sign the ceasefire agreement at the Berlin conference. «He behaved oddly: he turned off his phone, did not get in touch with anyone, and he left without a warning» — the source of the news agency said. The international conference on Libya was held on Sunday, on 19th of January, in Berlin.
4 Iran
The official representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Abbas Mousavi, announced that Iran remains committed to the ‘Joint Comprehensive Action Plan’, and he called the claims of Germany, France, and the UK against Iran to be «unreasonable». «For Tehran, the real actions of the opposing parties on the ‘Joint Comprehensive Action Plan’ are important, not their declarations of an intent» — Abbas Mousavi explained. On 14th of January, the foreign ministers of Germany, France and the UK announced the launch of a dispute settlement mechanism for the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan for the Iranian nuclear program. The reason for the launch, according to the Europeans, is the Iranian failure to fulfill the obligations.
5 Iraq
The Iraqi newspaper «As Sabah» reports that Iraq plans to send delegations to Russia, China and Ukraine to discuss the purchase of modern air defense systems. The newspaper «As Sabah» was told about such intention by a member of the parliamentary committee on security and defense — Badr al-Ziyadi. He noted that the parliament is considering the idea of buying the weapons by selling the Iraqi oil products, following the example of the ‘oil-for-reconstruction agreement’, concluded recently with China.
