On 12th of February, at 10:40 — Moscow time — a US Navy Virginia-class submarine was spotted near the Kuril island of Urup. Training of the Russian Pacific Fleet is currently being held in that area.

The crew of the submarine was given a message in Russian and English languages: “You are in the territorial waters of Russia. Surface immediately». The American submarine ignored the demand, and left the Russian territory.

In accordance with the Russian norms on the protection of the state borders — specifically, in underwater conditions — a frigate of the Pacific Fleet «Marshal Shaposhnikov» took the appropriate counter-measures.

The American submarine used an underwater jamming device against radars and acoustic sensors, and left the Russian territorial waters at the maximum speed.

«The Russian Pacific Fleet continues the planned exercises and the patrols of the underwater space in order to prevent the violation of the Russian state border» — the Russian Defense Ministry reported.

The Russian Defense Ministry summoned the US military attaché due to the violation of the territorial waters of Russia by an American submarine.
